Don’t Let Fear Keep You from Your Dream Job.
I once read a study that stated that it takes an average of five years for most people to make a significant life change. Isn’t that sad? What a waste of time.
Unfortunately, during my years of coaching I have found that this statistic is both sad and true. Granted some people just seem to LOVE to complain. We’ve all heard them. I’m not talking about them. I’m talking about the ones who have lost their passion and energy. Lost their excitement about getting up in the morning and instead plod through each day watching the clock–counting down the days and years until retirement because they are afraid of making a change.
Did you know that changing jobs (or any other major life change for that matter) can often take on some of the same characteristics as the grieving process? Who would wish to go through that? According to the Kubler-Ross Stages of Grief from their book “On Death and Dying” these are:
- Denial (this isn't happening to me!)
- Anger (why is this happening to me?)
- Bargaining (I promise I'll be a better person if...)
- Depression (I don't care anymore)
- Acceptance (I'm ready for whatever comes)
Everyone has heard F.D.R’s quote “The only thing to fear is fear itself.” Fear as a whole can be intensely overwhelming. By facing it head on and breaking it down into smaller more manageable pieces and addressed individually, they can often seem quite harmless. Silly even. Most people realize this on an intellectual level and yet somehow they still remain stuck. Paralyzed with indecision and doubt.
It’s often said, “The only thing permanent is change.” When we don’t make changes and decisions on our own accord they are eventually made for us. When this happens, you are often left with few options and choices. Many of those may even be worse than your LAST situation. Letting someone else press the “eject” button on your life is not much fun is it?
Being in control of our own personal happiness and destiny is our right as a human being. Your time is precious and not to be wasted! Now is the moment to take your unique talents and skills which you identified during the Birkman Process; arm yourself with the knowledge you’ve gained during our coaching session; and fight the fear which keeps you stuck and unhappy. Get out there and claim a life you love! We both know you deserve it!
